Cracking the Code on Food Waste – One Egg at a Time
Eggs are a kitchen cornerstone offering a versatile and affordable protein source packed with potential. But sadly, too many eggs end up being tossed due to confusion around expiry dates and storage. Let’s put an end to the confusion and discover how eggs can become our secret weapon to help prevent food waste.
Expiry vs. Best Before Dates
The date stamped on your egg carton isn’t an expiry date – it’s a BEST BEFORE date. This indicates the date when the eggs are expected to maintain peak quality. Eggs are actually safe to consume for several weeks after this date, provided they’re stored properly.
How Fresh Are They?
There’s a simple way to check an egg’s freshness without relying on the date. Fill a bowl with water and gently place an egg in it. A fresh egg will sink to the bottom and lie flat on its side. As the egg ages, an air pocket develops in the larger end, causing it to stand upright or even bob to the surface. Eggs that float are the oldest since they’ve had time to develop a large air cell. They are often still safe to use. To check, crack it open into a bowl and examine its sight and smell. You’ll know right away if it’s spoiled by its unpleasant odour.
