Canned beans make great tasting, healthy and affordable meals. Once you open a can, they’ll only last three to four days in the fridge. Put those leftover beans to good use with our top five bean tips.
1. Freeze Them
Leftover beans freeze and thaw beautifully. Freeze rinsed beans in tightly sealed containers in convenient amounts. Or freeze in single layer on a baking sheet before transferring to a freezer bag so you can take what you need for soups, salads or smoothies.
2. Pack Protein In Your Salad
Add your favourite beans, lentils or chickpeas to any lettuce, vegetable, grain or pasta salad for added flavour, texture and nutrients. Perfect for a satisfying lunch to see you through the day. Try this Pumpkin Feta Lentil Salad.
3. Bake Brownies
Did you know you can use beans in baking? Replace half of the fat with beans to get added fibre and protein in your baking. Try substituting mashed white beans in cookies or black beans in brownies in place of oil or butter.
4. Add Them To Your Smoothie
Add a tablespoon or two of beans to your favourite smoothie to boost the protein and fiber content.
