Best ways to store and use Green Onions

What is the best storage for green onions? Can you freeze green onions? How long do green onions last in the fridge? We have answers to all of these food-saving questions and storage tips:

Best Storage

The fridge is the best place to store green onions (also known as scallions). Unlike other onions that are freshest at room temperature, green onions should be kept refrigerated.

Ensure your fridge is set between 0 and 4° C.

Can I Freeze It?

Yes.
Green onions can be frozen for three to four months, and even adapt well to flash freezing.

Fresher For Longer

To extend the life of green onions, place them in a jar in the fridge with a small amount of water just covering the roots. Green onions can also be regrown by placing the jar on a windowsill.

Use It Up

Extra green onions can be used as garnishes or incorporated into breads, pan-fried roti or omelets.

Did You Know?

Thinner scallions have a milder taste, while thicker ones have a stronger onion flavour and are more resilient to holding their shape when cooked.
