What is the best storage for avocados? Can you freeze avocados? How long do avocados last in the fridge?
Best Storage
The fridge is the best place to store ripe avocados.
If your avocados are ripe, store them in the fridge in their original packaging. If you want them to ripen, store them at room temperature until ripe and then move to the fridge until you’re ready to use them.
Can I Freeze It?
Yes.
To freeze your avocado, cut it in half, remove the stone, peel it and put in a sealable bag or container and freeze. You can also puree or mash the avocados with a fork or in a food processor with a little bit of lime or lemon juice. Store the purée in a resealable bag and freeze.
Fresher For Longer
If you only need half an avocado, leave the stone in the other half, add a squeeze of lemon to the cut side, place in a tightly sealed container, and refrigerate. This will prevent your avocado from going black.
Use It Up
You can add avocados to smoothies for an extra creamy treat. Frozen avocados are great for making guacamole, dressings and spreads: just defrost them overnight in the fridge and they’re ready to use!
Did You Know?
Curious about how to prevent your avocado from going from green to black?
- Add a squeeze of lemon. Place a slice of lemon on top of the cut side of the avocado and wrap tightly.
- Brush with oil. Brush the surface of the avocado with oil. This creates a barrier that prevents oxidation.
- Rest it on an onion. Roughly chop up a red onion, place it in an airtight container, and lay your avocado half on top.
Leave the pit in. This will help reduce the speed of browning.
