Best ways to store and use Coconut Milk

What is the best storage for coconut milk? Can you freeze coconut milk? How long does coconut milk last in the fridge? We have answers to all of these food-saving questions and storage tips:

Best Storage

The cupboard is the best place to store canned coconut milk. Once opened, coconut milk should be stored in the fridge.

Ensure your fridge is set between 0 and 4° C.

Can I Freeze It?

Yes.

Coconut milk can spoil quickly once opened. To extend its life, freeze it in ice cube trays and then transfer the cubes into an airtight container or reusable bag stored in the freezer.
Depending on the brand, defrosted coconut milk may separate (when the milk proteins and fat separate from the liquid). If this happens, blend the defrosted coconut milk with an immersion blender for 30 seconds to re-emulsify it before using in recipes.

Fresher For Longer

Keep leftover coconut milk in a clean, airtight container. Coconut milk will keep in the fridge for a week, and in the freezer for up to one month.

Use It Up

Coconut milk can be used as a milk alternative in recipes or as a coffee creamer.

Did You Know?

One cup of coconut milk contains 50% of your daily vitamin B12 needs – a great addition to vegan diets lacking B vitamins.

The coconut milk you find in a carton in the refrigerated section of the supermarket as a drinking beverage differs greatly in nutrition, flavour and palatability from canned coconut milk.

Get More From Your Food

Coconut milk is made by pressing coconut pulp to release its rich, flavourful cream. Once pressed, the cream is then blended with water, vitamins, minerals, thickeners or gums, and sometimes sugar.
